Definition · applies to solutions of hybrid systems

Graduate

A solution of a hybrid system is Zeno if it has infinitely many jumps while its ordinary time stays bounded.

Notes

In a Zeno solution, the time between jumps approaches zero, meaning the system jumps infinitely often jumps infinitely often in a finite amount of time.

Conversely, a solution is not necessarily Zeno if the time between jumps. For example, if the time between jumps is given by the harmonic sequence

\[1,~1/2,~1/3,~1/4,~1/5,~\dots\]

the ordinary time approaches infinity because the harmonic sequence diverges:

\[1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + \dots = \infty\]
