Definition · applies to lists

Elementary

To append something to a list is to add it at the end.

Undergraduate (collections and data structures)

To append $x$ to a list $(a_1, \dots, a_n)$ is to form the list $(a_1, \dots, a_n, x)$, with $x$ added at the end.

Notes

Some programming languages use “append” for joining two lists, which is concatenation. Compare prepend, which adds an element at the beginning.
